Biela’s Comet: The Comet That Died Twice

In February 1826, an Austrian army captain named Wilhelm von Biela was spending his evenings the way I spend mine—sweeping a small telescope across the sky. From a garrison town in Bohemia, Biela wasn’t a professional astronomer. He’d been wounded at the Battle of Leipzig years before, and during his long recovery in Prague, he sat in on a series of astronomy lectures that inspired his love of the night sky.

On the night of February 27, he found a dim blotch in the constellation Aries. He tracked it night after night and did the math. This wasn’t a new comet at all. It was the same object recorded in 1772 and again in 1805. Biela had found a periodic comet, one that kept a six-year, nine-month appointment with the sun. Only two other comets known at the time, Halley’s and Encke’s, did the same.

They named it after him. There’s a crater on the moon with his name on it, too.

He finished out his military career, retired to Venice after a stroke in 1844, and took up art collecting. He never lived to see what his comet would become.

The Comet Everyone Feared

Astronomers ran the numbers on Biela’s orbit and found something disconcerting. The comet crossed Earth’s orbit around the Sun! When the comet returned in 1832, newspapers across Europe worked themselves into a panic.

The calculation was simple enough to misread and just scary enough to spread. Yes, the comet’s path crossed Earth’s. But Earth itself wouldn’t reach that same point in space until a full month later. The comet and home planet missed each other by about fifty million miles. Nobody in 1832 found that especially comforting, though.

The comet slipped by again in 1839, barely observed, and the world waited for 1845.

Two Comets Where One Should Be

At first, the 1845 return seemed routine. The Vatican Observatory recovered the comet on schedule in late November. It brightened nicely through December.

Then, in mid-January 1846, observers at Yale’s telescope in New Haven noticed something strange. What had been a single familiar smudge now appeared to have a fainter companion—a second, distinct point of light traveling alongside it. Word spread quickly across the Atlantic. Astronomers in Washington, London, and elsewhere confirmed the discovery, each initially doubting their own eyes until reports poured in from others.

Biela’s Comet had split in half.

Later calculations showed the actual breakup had likely occurred years earlier, probably around 1842 near the farthest point of its orbit, where no one was watching. The Sun’s heat and tidal stresses had been unraveling the nucleus long before the fracture became visible from Earth.

For the rest of that apparition, the two fragments journeyed side by side, each trailing its own tail and alternating in brightness like reluctant performers. By the time they returned in 1852, they were roughly ten times as far apart as in 1846. One faint, the other fading fast. Astronomers watched the last traces of both disappear that September, unaware they were witnessing a final farewell.

The comet never came back after that. Not in 1859, not in 1865, not in 1872. Astronomers searched those years anyway. By 1872, there was nothing left to find.

The Night the Sky Fell

Except there was.

On the night the comet should have arrived in 1872, something else showed up instead. Meteors began falling out of the constellation Andromeda. They were slow, reddish, trailing smoky paths across the dark. An observer in England estimated more than fifty thousand meteors dropped before dawn! In Athens, someone described hearing what sounded like distant gunfire from the northwest as the sky spat out sparks. In Italy, four astronomers counted more than thirty thousand more that evening.

It was the comet’s funeral. The dust Biela had shed on its last two passes through the inner solar system had at last drifted into Earth’s path, all at once, and was burning up by the ton.

It was one of the first times anyone had proof, in real time, that a comet and a meteor shower could be the same story, just told in different chapters.

They called the shower the Andromedids. It returned even stronger in 1885. By some counts, more than seventy-five thousand meteors an hour arrived at its peak. People around the world read it as an omen. In Burma, the ruling dynasty fell within weeks of the storm. Chroniclers in China simply wrote that the stars fell like rain from dusk until dawn.

Connection to the Great Chicago Fire

There’s a piece of comet lore worth clearing up here, since it still makes the rounds. Some people connect the Great Chicago Fire of October 1871 to Biela’s Comet, arguing that burning fragments fell from the sky and set the city ablaze.

It’s an intriguing story, and it gained traction because devastating fires erupted that same night across Wisconsin and Michigan. But the timeline doesn’t fit. The spectacular Andromedid meteor storm associated with Biela’s debris didn’t arrive until November 1872, a full year later.

Historians don’t know exactly what ignited the Chicago Fire, but they do know the conditions were ideal for disaster with months of drought, powerful winds, and a city built largely of wood. No comet required.

A Time of Silence

After 1885, the shower faded fast. Jupiter’s gravity had been tugging the debris trail off Earth’s path for decades, the way it tugs at most things eventually. And by the early 1900s, the Andromedids had all but vanished from naked-eye view.

The comet a soldier had found on a winter night in Bohemia left nothing behind that anyone could still see.

That’s where the story sat for more than a hundred years.

2011: The Return of Biela’s Ghost

In December 2011, six radar stations across Canada picked up fifty meteors an hour. They moved slowly, far slower than the quick Leonids that pass through every November. Astronomer Peter Brown and his colleagues tracked the debris back to a Biela flyby in 1649—more than a century before Biela was even born, before Montaigne and Messier ever logged the comet in 1772.

The ghost of Biela’s Comet had come around again. Not the comet itself. That was long gone, and gone for good. But something more ancient than the comet’s own name, shed on a pass through the solar system so far back that no living person witnessed it, had drifted through Earth’s path and lit up the sky over Canada in faint, orange streaks. Some models suggest that the old debris stream could still put on a real show one of these years.

What Remains

Wilhelm von Biela died in Venice in 1856, four years after the last sighting of his comet and sixteen years before it fell to pieces over Europe as a meteor storm. He never knew any of it. Never knew his name would end up attached to a shower instead of a comet.

I think about that sometimes, out in the backyard on a clear December night, waiting to see if the Andromedids will show. The chair is more comfortable these days, my hair more silver than the meteors, but the wonder feels the same as it did when I was a boy.

It’s one of the oldest lessons the sky keeps teaching if you stick around long enough to notice. Nothing really ends. It just changes shape. A comet becomes dust, dust becomes fire across the dark, and fire becomes memory.

But, in the end, nothing is ever truly lost. It only waits for the right season to shine again.
